Updating an MKVS

Post by zzing » Thu Nov 30, 2017 2:02 pm

So I have been doing some work on an MKVS that somebody donated to our makerspace. I wanted to know what options existed for updating it further.

Some pictures: https://imgur.com/a/D3iDG

Some notable things I have done:

1. Added some BuildTak
2. Upgraded Marlin to the latest and performed an auto calibration with a manual switch I made
3. Added a parts fan mount (for some reason it didn't have one)
4. Changed out an arduino clone that was having trouble for a real one (not sure how this thing ended up with a clone)
5. Printed a new electronics holder

Now what upgrades I can do to this thing will definitely depend on budget I can put together. I would like to be able to do some autosensing and replace the jhead with a v6 or a lite6 as I feel both of these options should be within a reasonably small budget.

Doing more things like replacing the electronics I am not entirely certain about because it can get expensive real fast. I already have a duet wifi I use for my own printer, so I do have some experience with those.

Right now I think this thing looking pretty decent compared to it not working much when I got ahold of it.

I would like to know all possibilities.

Adding FSRs would be awesome as long as Marlin is capable and reliable. We used Rich Cattel's version several years ago. Not sure if it is still an option.
If you have an working printer capable of printing in ABS, I would recommend upgrading the Micro Extruder and adding an E3D V6 hotend plus 2 2040 blower cooling fans. The STLs you need are here https://github.com/UltiBots/D300VS.
